Five students have been given scholarships from the Studley College Trust in 2013/14.

Cameron Bennison, 19, from Brampton, Cumbria  is working towards a degree in Rural Property Management. Cameron said the funds would help him to buy materials such as books to help him further his knowledge.

He said: “I am glad the trust put faith in me and what I want to achieve. The future of the rural economy is somewhat clouded in mystery, the use of land is split between food production, biofuel production and environmental purposes.  I would like to focus on the environmental purposes as a career and upon completion of my degree would hope to specialise in woodland and ideally work for a wood creation body such as The Woodland Trust which plants trees for the benefit of everyone, without the intention of harvesting and profiting of these woods.

Also receiving a Studley College Trust scholarship is Thomas Greenway, 20, from Barrow-in-Furness. Thomas is a second year BSc (Hons) Agriculture student at Harper Adams.

“Being awarded this scholarship means a lot to me because I feel like my effort to break into the industry is being recognised. I will use the money to complete an artificial insemination course, which should make me more employable,” said Thomas, who would like to work in the dairy industry, despite not coming from a farming background.

Meleri Wyn Griffith, 22, from Pwllheli, Wales, has been awarded the scholarship to help her in her final year of an agri food marketing with business studies degree.

She said: “The scholarship will help me buy essentials for my final year of study here at Harper, books and IT equipment. It has been very important for me to make the most of this year after a very successful sandwich year placement with Dunbia (Wales). I worked at one of Europe’s largest lamb abattoirs which has a £12million development project on the site in 2012/13.

“My ambition is to become a well-known face of the agri food sector, working with and developing new businesses,” added Meleri, a keen member of the Harper Cymru society for Welsh students at º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø.

Agricultural Engineering student, Luke Ormond. 19, from Antrobus, Cheshire said: “I am honoured to be one of the recipients of the Studley College Trust Scholarship. Thanks to their generous support I am going to be able to use my university place to my full potential. The award will help pay for provisions in the coming year, which will enable me to thrive at º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø. This will set me up to prosper in the agricultural engineering field.

“My ambition is to run my own engineering company, making products for the global agricultural engineering market,” adds Luke, who has had a life-long passion for tractors.

Matthew Gilbert, 19 from Co Armagh, Northern Ireland is a first year BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Mechanisation student. He said: “I am extremely grateful to have been selected for the scholarship. I thank the Studley College Trust for their generous award.”
