David Thornton was one of the stand-out students at the recent scholarships presentation at º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø.

David, 20, from Maganey. Republic of Ireland. is the recipient of not one but three scholarships, all awarded on merit in recognition of his passion for his subject and academic performance.

The first of David’s awards was made before he even set foot on the Harper Adams campus, in Shropshire, England. He was one of four recipients of entrance scholarships for students from Ireland starting at the university, worth £3,000 for each year of academic study.

David was selected last December as the latest scholar sponsored by international agricultural engineering giant CLAAS, and will work for the company during his forthcoming placement year, in addition to receiving scholarship funding of up to £6,000 between now and the completion of his degree.

And David has also been selected to receive the John Heading Scholarship, sponsored by Harper Adams alumnus Mr Heading.

The former pupil of Coláiste Lorcáin, Castledermot, said: “It means a lot to know that these people are prepared to invest in a young agricultural engineer like myself, and gives me the motivation to do something similar when I graduate.

“I cannot thank CLAAS, John Heading, and the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Development Trust enough, as the scholarships have been invaluable to me. I would struggle with the extra costs involved in living in another country without them. I am now in my 2nd year and receiving these scholarships motivates me to strive to do my very best in my studies.

“Next academic year, I will be undertaking my placement with CLAAS at their headquarters in Harsewinkel, Germany. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to spend a year abroad, and look forward to working for such a major player in the agricultural machinery sector. It’s going to be a great experience, and a chance to work with the machinery which I’ve been fascinated with since I was a child,” added David, former captain of the university GAA and former chairman of the Harper Ireland student society at Harper Adams.
