The car show at the Concours de Graylyn capped a weekend of activities in the Triad
Sept 21-23.
Friday saw a day of action on the track for Concours registrants. A rare chance for
drivers to lap the South Course at VIR. There was a good turnout at VIR despite the
mist and rain. As the day warmed up, the track dried by 11:30AM. Many drivers had
three or four sessions on the South Course and all seemed very happy with the day.
On Saturday 60-70 cars arrived in Old Salem for the Rally, organized by our good
friends in the Austin-Healey Club. They also do the annual Moonshine Run in May.
Peter and Gayle Brock attended and ran the rally in a bright red Superformance Coupe
provided by Olthoff Racing. What a treat to follow Peter as he carved his way through
the countryside north of Winston-Salem. We stopped at Pilot Mountain and started
back toward Old Salem, this time the red Coupe filled our mirrors with a menacing
presence. The Austin-Healey and Corsa Rossa people did a great job as usual on the
course and the level of organization. The only problem all day seemed to be trying to
find shade at Old Salem. It was HOT! On Saturday evening there was a gala dinner at
Graylyn, with Peter Brock delivering a talk on automotive aerodynamics.
Sunday was the car show and the Triad Z Club showed in with people, shelters, water
and Z cars! We had a great turnout, from Keith Baileys 510 to the three Nismo 350Zs.
Several new members came with their 350Zs and it was great to meet so many new Z
owners. The Z Club had a display honoring Jim Fitzgerald and we must thank Alan
Giles for organizing this, with help from Rock Vest and Keith Hege. Keith Hege spent a
lot of time with the folks at the Triad Z Club corral. Thanks also to the many volunteers
Sunday who watched the rare photos, trophies, plaques and other memorabilia on
display. The day ended on a high note for Z owners. Larry Loftin won his class in the
Concours with his gorgeous original Black Pearl 1978 280Z! There were some
confused Jag owners wondering how a Datsun beat them but the judges were
unanimous and Larry took home the Gold (presented by Pete Brock)!
